Volunteers at the heart of the action!

At The Lighthouse Children and Families , volunteers are at the heart of the action and are an integral part of the team. Supervised by an innovative and multidisciplinary team of professionals, they contribute in many ways to the personalized care and services offered to children and families. A token of their engagement, The Lighthouse’s vitality is no doubt rooted in their precious support. Indeed, The Lighthouse can rely on more than 16,000 hours of volunteer work per year, which represents 44 hours per day of gracious support by the community: this is a remarkable contribution!

The Lighthouse is pleased to celebrate the collective efforts of volunteers by joining in the theme "The Volunteer Factor: Lifting Communities" promoted by Volunteer Canada for National Volunteer Week 2019. To mark 20 years of community involvement by volunteers who have been helping to care for seriously ill children since 1999, The Lighthouse would like to highlight their achievements, underlining their creativity and commitment.

Special guests with amazing talent: Sharing with joy and good humour their passion for music, their skills as storytellers, puppeteers and make-up artists, or even delving into their professional talent, our guest volunteers brighten the daily lives of children thanks to their unwavering talent!

Specialized recreational activities: With The Lighthouse’s new Child Life Program which paves the way for participation from the community, volunteers have brought forward their professional skills, such as teaching, to develop training activities with the animation team.

Training for teamwork: Many volunteers have completed the training module Principles for Moving Clients Safety (PMCS) to support the work of ordelies and recreational activity specialists with children, thus facilitating efficient teamwork and fun activities for the kids.

Preserving memory, one activity at a time: Building on the experience of activities which celebrate precious moments that leave traces of each child's passage, the volunteers put their artistic talent to good use in order to support the realization of the children’s personal projects such as writing songs, creating watercolours, assisting in the making and finishing of casts.

Outings as a group: Check out Chocolats Favoris parlour, a destination of choice for a getaway in the vibrant Angus district. Or explore biodiversity at Montreal’s Botanical Garden. Go trick-or-treating on Halloween. Have The Lighthouse friends at the Christmas Parade on Sainte-Catherine's street with Urgence Santé.

All these activities were made possible thanks to volunteers who made sure that the children were enjoying every moment to the fullest! Every day, volunteers contribute significantly to the quality of support offered to children and families. They are an inspiration to all, and let’s hope that these few examples can inspire many to join and contribute to The Lighthouse’s vitality!

A grateful thanks to all the volunteers at The Lighthouse - thank you for bringing such extraordinary energy to the community and for being such an inspiration to get involved and make a difference for the greater good.
